Life & Stress

Even before COVID-19, two-thirds of full-time workers experienced burnout on the job, according to a 2018 Gallup study. With people working remotely some days and on-site other days, do you know anyone who isn’t struggling with work-life balance now? Stress impacts our mood, outlook on life, relationships and job performance. Learning the skills and mindset to reduce stress and increase happiness takes practice but is absolutely possible.

 Areas of Focus

ANXIETY

Some of the most stressful times can occur during the teen and young professional years while learning to navigate social terrain, gain greater independence, and figure out life and career goals. Some anxiety is a normal reaction to stressful situations. It can help people deal with a tricky situation, and maintain focus on an important task. For most individuals, anxiety is often fleeting and goes away on its own. However, there are a variety of anxiety disorders that can impact the daily functioning of teens and young professionals, leading them to experience fear, shyness, nervousness, and avoidance. We can help you address your anxiety and the way it may impact your life.

PREMARITAL COUNSELING

At Altman Therapy we provide counseling to people struggling with developing and sustaining romantic relationships. Dr. Altman also specializes in providing premarital counseling to young adult couples to help them develop the skills to build and sustain honest, mutually supportive, and strong relationships before and after they get married.

PARENT COACHING

Dr. Altman helps parents communicate with their teens and young adults in ways that help both parties feel heard and understood. Dr. Altman speaks both 16-year-old and adult fluently. Let Dr. Altman help you build a healthy interdependent relationship based on communication, mutual respect and boundaries.

DEPRESSION

Some people experience feelings of overwhelming sadness and frustration, finding it difficult to cope and leaving them feeling isolated and alone. This is different than just feeling “a little down” or “blue." If you’re depressed, you may feel like no one can possibly understand what you’re going through and that nothing will ever get better. You may withdraw from things you once loved, feel a lack of energy, and perhaps have stopped hanging out with your friends. You may be fighting with your parents and doing poorly in school or your job. You may feel out of control, like you are a burden and that there’s no hope for a bright future. There is hope – you can reclaim your life with the right treatment and lifestyle choices.

PERFECTIONISM

There is a famous expression: "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” "Perfectionism" is difficulty with letting things be less than ideal: The project has to be perfect before being submitted. The outfit has to look perfect before going out to a social event. The business proposal has to be just right. These types of thoughts often cause stress and can result in procrastination and burnout. Perfectionism can show up in different ways including: Difficulty with finishing school or work assignments, experiencing performance anxiety, and avoidance of new experiences, all of which disrupts performance outcomes. Dr. Altman and his team can help you address these issues and begin to help you let go of the notion that things need to be perfect.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”
