Dr. Josh Altman, PhD, LCSW, MBA
Founder and Director
I’ve worked in the mental health and wellness field for over 14 years as a therapist, lecturer, and supervisor. I connect extremely well with young professionals, entrepreneurs and teens, building trust with warmth, sensitivity, and a laid-back style that gets results. Together, we will help you develop practical skills and strategies to enhance your relationships, improve your decision-making, boost your mood and feel more confident.
Prior to creating Altman Therapy I worked in hospitals, universities and community mental health clinics with a broad and diverse client population. For almost 6 years I served as the associate director of the Adelphi University Student Counseling Center, New York, providing clinical care, lecturing and supervising a staff of 25+ employees — which serves 8,000 people on 3 campuses. I’m passionate about contributing to the latest research on mental health, wellbeing and resilience and I’ve been regularly featured in Newsweek, Fast Company, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Modern Healthcare, and other publications.
I trained and received my Master's degree at New York University Silver School of Social Work. I completed internships at Phoenix House’s IMPACT Outpatient Program in New York City where I counseled teens and their families as they sought to acquire the valuable skills necessary to sustain healthy recovery from alcohol and substance misuse. My advanced internship was at the Saint Vincent Hospital Child and Adolescent Outpatient Clinic, New York, NY.
I received my doctorate at the Smith College School for Social Work in Northampton, Massachusetts where I also served as a lecturer and adjunct instructor to Master’s and Doctoral level students. Over the years subjects taught include: Biopsychosocial Assessment, Diagnosis, Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Psychodynamic Theory (Drive Theory, Object Relations, Ego Psychology, and Self Psychology) Theories of Resilience, Dissertation Writing and others. I received my MBA from Adelphi University. I’m an avid mountain biker, basketball player, practitioner of mindfulness, and reader. I live in the New York City area with my wife, children and Bernadoodle, Molly. I provide teletherapy to clients in New York and New Jersey.

Therapist
I’m a former lawyer turned therapist. My approach to therapy is to provide a supportive and safe environment where you feel heard, understood, and never judged. Work, school, marriage, becoming a new parent, losing a loved one, receiving a medical diagnosis, and many situations life throws at us can leave us feeling depressed, anxious, overwhelmed or even angry. Together we can work through these transitions and experiences to help you gain insight, concrete tools, and specific strategies as you increase your self-esteem, sense of agency, and self compassion.
I specialize in helping people struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, interpersonal issues at home, work and school, or those trying to break free of unhelpful patterns. As a former lawyer, I understand the unique demands, stress, and expectations many lawyers, students, executives, and high-level professionals experience, including perfectionism, imposter syndrome, relationship struggles, and difficulty achieving a work-life balance. My life experience and career as a large NYC firm lawyer combined with my empathy and compassion enable me to be your teammate to help you achieve your goals. Together, we can explore how your life experiences impact your current relationships and patterns in order to help you live fully and authentically.
I received my Master’s Degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. My extensive training includes working with children and adolescents with developmental disabilities, adults with Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and other degenerative illnesses, and cancer. My advanced year training was at a college counseling center where I provided therapy to teenagers and young adults struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship problems, chronic mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, grief and bereavement, and LGBTQ identity and support. I have advanced training in couples therapy from The Gottman Institute which uses the Gottman Method for couples work.
Prior to becoming a therapist, I received my JD from Cardozo School of Law and practiced law at a large NYC firm.
